Since the late 19th century, the beauty of the Rock River Valley drew artists, industrialists, and politicians to Oregon, IL. Most notable was Lorado Taft. He and his friends established the Eagles Nest Art Colony on the east bluff overlooking the city. Much of his work remains for public display, including the iconic Eternal Indian, aka “The Blackhawk Statue.” Located in Lowden State Park, just 2.1 miles from Oregon, this 48 foot impressive statue sits at one of the most picturesque viewpoints along the Rock River. The park also has hiking trails, 126 campsites, and a variety of amenities.
